The first Innovation Circle is off to a great start! Denise Rockhill organized the first circle - an informal meeting over brown-bag lunch - to discuss search engine optimization. (See her notes below.) The second meeting will be Friday, March 23, at the NFPA offices on North Mayfair Road in Milwaukee.

If you have an issue you would like to explore with WSAE colleagues, consider creating an Innovation Circle in your area. Here is a tip sheet for getting started. Or, call the WSAE office and we will help you get started.

    Denise writes:
Thanks for participating in the luncheon discussion at our February 1st inaugural SEO Innovation Circle.  Great conversations revolving around Social Media and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) experiences were shared.  Based on our discussions, following is a list of topics and possible ideas for the group to consider pursuing and offering as resources to WSAE:

    •  Social Media and SEO Tools Discussed
      1. Keyword Search
      2. Social Media Schedule - Monthly
      3. Finding time to do Google Analytic Tracking
      4. Staff Planning Meetings to focus on Social Media

    • Group Questions and Concerns
      • Should we blanket all media outlets with the same message?  Should the message be different for each outlet?
      • Content is key.  How do we provide value to those people coming to the website/etc. and how does it tie into the overall association strategy?
      • How do we keep the content updated and fresh - this is a challenge, to stay current
      • How do we build the data to determine who our audience is and are there multiple audiences and how do we deal with them?
      • How do we help people to opt in to our content?  Needs to be creative and interesting.
      • Know that we need to track but how do we find the resources (time/staff) to do so?
      • What about the whole mobile platform issue?
      • How do you engage the member/person once they find your site?
      • How do you learn how to use all the Google Analytics tools?

      1. Possible Solutions/Tools to Consider
        1. Creating a template for a monthly Social Media Schedule
        2. Google Analytics and all the free tools available in it
        3. Google AdWords and how do you determine the budget
        4. Facebook
        5. Twitter
        6. Website
        7. Keyword Searches to find out what people are typing in to Google and searching for
        8. HootSuite
        9. Purchasing domains
    • Next Steps
      • Group members will post examples and other ideas for review and discussion on the Innovation Network.
      • At the next luncheon meeting:
        • Create a Purpose Statement for the group
        • Narrow our focus and prioritize two or three resources that we would like to begin to work on
